Ivan Tišov (born February 8, 1870 – died September 20, 1928) was an important Croatian painter. He learned art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich in Germany. He brought new art ideas, like the Munich Secession style, back to Zagreb. Tišov is famous for his paintings in public buildings and churches, especially in his home region of Slavonia in Croatia.

The Early Life of Ivan Tišov

Ivan Tišov was born in a village called Viškovci, which is close to Đakovo. He went to elementary school in his village. Later, he continued his studies at the School of Crafts in Zagreb.

He then attended the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. He even received a special scholarship to study at the famous Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. From 1895, Tišov became a teacher. He taught painting and drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts, Zagreb for the rest of his life.

Tišov's First Big Art Projects

While still a student in Vienna, Tišov got a big job. He was asked to paint four special pictures for the ceiling of the Golden Hall in Zagreb. These paintings showed ideas like worship, theology (the study of religion), art, and science.

One of his paintings, "Art" (also known as "Music"), was very successful. It won a bronze medal at a big exhibition in Budapest in 1896.

Painting Portraits and Landscapes

Tišov painted many portraits of people. He was very good at capturing how people looked, often painting directly with his brush without needing many sketches. He painted his wife, Ana Neuhäuser, and other important people like Vladimir Vidrić.

Later in his career, Tišov's paintings started to look different. They showed the influence of another famous Croatian painter, Vlaho Bukovac. Tišov's pictures became darker, using strong yellow, blue, and green colors.

He often painted scenes from his home region of Slavonia. One of his most beautiful works is "Under the Maple" (Pod javorom). Over time, he started to paint more about local folklore instead of old myths. Tišov also created large wall paintings in churches in places like Križevci and Bjelovar.

Training in Paris

From 1913 to 1914, Tišov spent a year in Paris, France. He trained at the Académie Julian. This training helped him prepare for a big project: creating decorations for the University Library in Zagreb.

Ivan Tišov passed away in Zagreb on September 20, 1928.

Ivan Tišov's Artistic Legacy

Many of Ivan Tišov's important paintings can still be seen today. His works "Worship," "Theology," "Art," and "Science" decorate the ceilings of the Croatian Institute of History in Zagreb.

Even though other famous Croatian artists like Vlaho Bukovac were very popular at the time, Tišov's art has a special, lasting quality. He was excellent at using colors and creating original compositions.

Much of his work was for large government buildings or churches. For example, he painted altars in Roman Catholic churches and an Iconostasis (a wall of icons) in an Orthodox church. He also painted the ceiling of the Croatian National Theatre. Because these were big official jobs, his paintings often followed certain rules. This means they might not show as much "freedom" as some other artists' works. His paintings show the shift from older classical art styles to the newer secession style.
