Ivan Vekić (born October 18, 1938 – died December 17, 2014) was an important Croatian politician and lawyer. He helped start the Croatian Democratic Union party. He also served as Croatia's Minister of Interior during the Croatian War of Independence.

Ivan Vekić was born in a place called Poljica, near Vrgorac, on October 18, 1938. At that time, this area was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He grew up and later became a lawyer.
Early Political Life
Vekić was involved in a cultural group called Matica hrvatska. In 1989, he became one of the people who helped create the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). This was a very important political party in Croatia. In 1990, he was elected to the Croatian Parliament. This meant he became a representative for the people.
Role in Croatian History
Ivan Vekić served as the Minister of Interior for Croatia. He held this important job from July 31, 1991, to April 15, 1992. This time was during the Croatian War of Independence. During the war, he also held the rank of Colonel in the military.
He received an award called the Order of Ante Starčević. This award recognized his work in helping to build and develop the independent Croatian state. He was offered five other awards by President Franjo Tuđman, but he chose not to accept them.
Later Years
After the war, Ivan Vekić continued to be involved in politics. He sometimes disagreed with the new leaders of the Croatian Democratic Union. In 2003, he published a book called Steps in History - Memories and Events. After this, he left the party.
In 2011, he started a new political party called the Croatian Guard National Party. He was the president of this party. Ivan Vekić passed away on December 17, 2014, in Osijek, Croatia.
