Early Life and Family
Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić was born on April 18, 1874, in a town called Ogulin. She came from the well-known Mažuranić family in Croatia. Her family was very important in Croatian history and culture.
Her Talented Family
Ivana's father, Vladimir Mažuranić, was a writer, a lawyer, and a historian. He wrote a special Croatian dictionary about history and law. Her grandfather, Ivan Mažuranić, was a politician and a poet. He was even the Ban of Croatia, which was like a governor or leader of the country.
Her grandmother, Aleksandra Demeter, had a brother named Dimitrija Demeter. He was a key person in the Croatian national revival movement. This movement helped to bring back Croatian culture and language.
Education and Moving
Ivana was mostly taught at home. Her family moved several times. First, they went to Karlovac, then to Jastrebarsko, and finally to Zagreb.
In 1892, Ivana married Vatroslav Brlić. He was also a politician and a respected lawyer. After they married, she moved to Brod na Savi (which is now called Slavonski Brod). She lived there for most of her life. Ivana had seven children and spent a lot of time raising them and focusing on their education. She first started writing in French.
Her Amazing Work
Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić began writing poetry, diaries, and essays when she was young. However, her works were not published until the early 1900s. After 1903, her stories and articles, like the "School and Holidays" series, started appearing more often in journals.
The Brave Adventures of Lapitch
In 1913, her book The Brave Adventures of Lapitch was published. This book quickly became very popular. It tells the story of Hlapić, a poor apprentice. He accidentally finds his master's lost daughter, and his luck begins to change for the better.
Croatian Tales of Long Ago
Another very popular book is Croatian Tales of Long Ago (Priče iz davnine). It was published in 1916. This book is special because Ivana created new fairy tales. She used names and ideas from old Slavic mythology of the Croats.
Because of this, people often compare her to famous writers like Hans Christian Andersen and J. R. R. Tolkien. They also wrote new stories but used parts of real myths. In 2003 and 2006, this book was even turned into an interactive computer game.
Recognition and Awards
Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. This is a very high honor for writers. She was nominated in 1931, 1935, 1937, and 1938.
In 1937, she made history. She became the first woman to be accepted as a Corresponding Member into the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts. This showed how much her work was valued. She also received the Order of Saint Sava award.
Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić is buried in Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb.
