J&R Kosher Meat and Delicatessen is a very old and famous butcher shop in Montreal, Canada. It sells special meat and food that follows Jewish dietary laws, called kosher. The store was started in 1952 by Robert Nemes. He was an immigrant from Romania and a Holocaust survivor.

Today, J&R Kosher is located at 5800 Cavendish Boulevard. This area is in the middle of Montreal's Jewish community. It is the oldest and one of the most well-known kosher meat shops left in the city. J&R delivers its meat all over Quebec and Ontario. They also ship their products to other parts of Canada.

How J&R Kosher Started

Robert Nemes came to Canada from Romania. He worked hard to save money. During the day, he worked in a meat factory. At night, he worked at a famous deli called Schwartz's. He used his savings and a small loan of $400 to open his own business. As the company grew, his son, Sidney, joined him to help run the shop.

Changes Over the Years

In 1978, Quebec passed a law called Bill 101. This law meant that businesses had to use French names. So, the store changed its name to Boucherie et Charcuterie Kascher J&R. This means "J&R Kosher Butcher and Delicatessen" in French.

In 1991, J&R Kosher moved from its first location. It moved to the Cavendish Mall in Côte Saint-Luc, Quebec. This was a bigger and newer place for the store.

By 1996, the original store location was closed. All the business moved to the Cavendish Mall. The new location was made much bigger. It had two floors, a full kitchen, an elevator, and even a smokehouse. There were also three large coolers. The whole space was over 10,000 square feet!

Even today, Robert Nemes still spends time at J&R. His son, Sidney, keeps adding new and exciting foods to the menu. Some of these new items include South African sausages, smoked meat hamburgers, and pulled beef. Pulled beef is a kosher version of pulled pork.
