Jürgen Kurbjuhn (born 26 July 1940 – died 15 March 2014) was a German football player. He was known for playing as a defender, mostly on the left side of the field.

Jürgen Kurbjuhn started his football journey with an amateur club called Buxtehuder SV. He was very good and even played for West Germany's youth national team. In 1960, he joined Hamburger SV, which was a very big club in Hamburg. At that time, Hamburger SV had just won the German football championship.

Jürgen Kurbjuhn's Club Career

Kurbjuhn quickly became an important player for Hamburger SV. In 1961, his team reached the semi-finals of the European Cup. This was a huge achievement, as they played against a strong team, Barcelona.

He also helped Hamburger SV win the German Cup in 1963. This is a major cup competition in German football. Kurbjuhn played many matches for the club. He scored 10 goals in 242 Bundesliga matches. The Bundesliga is Germany's top professional football league. He played for Hamburger SV until 1972. He had to stop playing football because of an injury.

Jürgen Kurbjuhn's International Career

Jürgen Kurbjuhn also played for the West Germany national team. His international career lasted for five matches, from April 1962 to May 1966.

He was part of the West Germany squad for the 1962 FIFA World Cup. This is one of the biggest football tournaments in the world. However, the coach, Sepp Herberger, did not use him in any of the matches. His last game for West Germany was on 4 May 1966. In that friendly match, West Germany beat Ireland 4–0. He was not chosen by the next coach, Helmut Schön, for the 1966 FIFA World Cup squad.

Life After Football

After retiring from football, Jürgen Kurbjuhn started a new career. From 1988, he owned an insurance company. This business was located in Buxtehude, the same town where he played as a youth.
