J. D. Tippit (born September 18, 1924 – died November 22, 1963) was an American police officer and a veteran of World War II. He served for 11 years with the Dallas Police Department in Texas. On November 22, 1963, about 45 minutes after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Officer Tippit was killed in a neighborhood in Oak Cliff, a part of Dallas, Texas.

Early Life and Military Service
J. D. Tippit was born near Annona, Texas. He grew up in a rural area. When he was 19 years old, he joined the United States Army. He served during World War II from 1944 to 1946. During his time in the Army, he was part of the 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was recognized for his service and received the Bronze Star medal.
Becoming a Police Officer
After his military service, Tippit returned home. He later decided to become a police officer. In 1952, he joined the Dallas Police Department. He worked as a patrolman, which means he was a police officer who patrolled the streets. He served the community of Dallas for 11 years.
Awards and Recognition
During his career, Officer Tippit received several awards for his bravery and dedication. These included the Certificate of Merit, the Medal of Valor, and the Police Medal of Honor. These awards showed how much his department valued his service.
The Day of His Death
On November 22, 1963, a very sad event happened in Dallas. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. About 45 minutes after this event, Officer Tippit was on patrol in the Oak Cliff area. He was killed while on duty.
