Jabbeke is a town in Belgium. It is a municipality, which means it is a local area with its own government. Jabbeke is located in the West Flanders province of Belgium.

The municipality of Jabbeke includes several smaller towns. These towns are Jabbeke itself, Snellegem, Stalhille, Varsenare, and Zerkegem. In 2006, about 13,572 people lived in Jabbeke. The total area of the municipality is about 53.76 square kilometers. This means there were about 252 people living in each square kilometer. This is called the population density.

Speed Records in Jabbeke

In the 1940s and 1950s, Jabbeke became very famous for speed. Many car companies came here to set new speed records. They used a special measured section of highway to test their cars.

Car manufacturers wanted to show how fast their cars could go. They asked the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium to officially measure and confirm the top speed of each car model.

Some of the famous cars that set records in Jabbeke include:

  • The Healey Elliott in 1946. It reached 110.65 miles per hour (mph). At that time, it was known as the 'fastest car in the world in series production'.

  • André Pilette set a Belgian record in the 2-liter car class. He drove a Veritas RS at 206 kilometers per hour (km/h).
  • In 1952, the Rover JET 1 was a special car powered by a gas turbine engine. Driven by Spen King, it set the first speed record for gas turbine cars. It reached 151.965 mph over a measured kilometer.
  • The unique Pegaso Z-102 car clocked 250 km/h. This made it the 'fastest production car in the world' at the time.
