Life of Jacinto Grau
Jacinto Grau was born in Barcelona, a city in Spain. During the Spanish Civil War, he worked for the Spanish government. He was a special representative for Spain in Panama. This meant he helped manage important connections between Spain and Panama. After the war, he moved to Argentina and lived there until he died in 1958. He could not return to Spain because of the war.
Jacinto Grau's Writing Career
Jacinto Grau wrote and published twenty-five plays. He did this over a period of fifty-five years. His most famous play was called El señor de Pigmalión (which means 'Mr. Pygmalion'). He wrote it in 1921. Even though it wasn't very well-known in Spain, it became very popular in other parts of Europe and in Latin America.
Grau's plays were not always about everyday life. They were often more imaginative and symbolic. He was inspired by other famous playwrights like George Bernard Shaw and Henrik Ibsen. Many people at the time thought his plays were very new and different. Modern experts describe him as a 'psychological idealist'. This means his plays often explored the inner thoughts and feelings of characters.
In 1949, Jacinto Grau was nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature. This is a very important award given to writers from all over the world.
