Jacinto was born in Güeñes, a town in Biscay, Spain. He joined the Spanish navy when he was young. His naval career took him to new places. He first moved to Puerto Rico, then to Montevideo in South America.
Defending Buenos Aires
Romarate played a key role in defending Buenos Aires. This was during the first British invasions of the Río de la Plata. He commanded a ship called "La Vizcaína". He helped free Buenos Aires from the British. During this battle, he was wounded. After his bravery, he was promoted to a higher rank. Romarate also fought to defend Buenos Aires against a second British invasion. This second attack was not successful.
Fighting for Spain in South America
Romarate did not agree with some new governments formed in South America. He did not support the government set up in Montevideo in 1808. So, he moved to Buenos Aires. He also did not support the May Revolution. This event removed the Spanish viceroy from power. When the Primera Junta took over, Romarate moved back to Montevideo. He also refused to help a plot by a group called the Royalists. This plot was stopped by the Buenos Aires government.
Montevideo declared war on Buenos Aires. Romarate fought in the naval blockade against Buenos Aires. This meant his ships tried to stop other ships from entering or leaving the city. During the Battle of San Nicolás, he won a victory. He defeated a small group of ships. These ships were trying to send help to Manuel Belgrano in the Paraguay campaign. However, Romarate was later defeated. This happened during the Battle of Martín García. He was defeated by a famous sailor named Guillermo Brown.
Return to Spain
Romarate did not give up until Montevideo finally surrendered. After the surrender, he asked to return to Spain. He wanted to fight in the Peninsular War. This war was fought in Spain against Napoleon's forces.
Later Life in Spain
After returning to Spain, Romarate continued his military career. He fought in the First Carlist War. This was a civil war in Spain. He passed away in 1836.
