Jack's Reef is a small community called a hamlet in Onondaga County, New York. It is part of the Town of Van Buren, New York. This area is known for its connection to the Seneca River.

History of Jack's Reef

Jack's Reef first grew around an old inn. This inn was located where an important road, Old Route 31, curved around a big bend in the Seneca River. This bend was shaped like an oxbow, which is a U-shaped curve in a river.

Changes to the River Route

Later, a new canal was built about a mile north of Jack's Reef. This canal made the river route shorter for boats. Because of this, Jack's Reef lost most of its business. It also lost much of its recreational traffic, like people stopping for fun.

Jack's Reef Today

Even after the canal was built, the nearby Seneca River still attracted people. Many summer residents came to enjoy the area. Today, more and more homes are being built in and around Jack's Reef. This is because it's an easy drive to Syracuse, a larger city nearby.
