Jack Sarfatti (born September 14, 1939) is an American theoretical physicist. He studies how the universe works at a very basic level. Most of his work is about quantum physics and consciousness.

Quantum physics looks at the smallest particles in the universe. Consciousness is about how we think and feel. Sarfatti has explored how these two big ideas might be connected.

Early Life and Education

Jack Sarfatti was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a neighborhood called Midwood. His father came from Greece.

After high school, Sarfatti went to Cornell University. He earned a degree in physics in 1960. He continued his studies at other universities. He received his master's degree in 1967. Then, he earned his Ph.D. in physics in 1969. His Ph.D. work was about how fluids behave at very cold temperatures.

Career and Ideas

From 1967 to 1971, Sarfatti taught physics. He was an assistant professor at San Diego State University. He also studied at famous science centers around the world. These included places in the UK and Germany.

In the 1970s, he changed his last name from Sarfatt to Sarfatti. He also decided to work outside of universities.

Sarfatti was part of a group called the Fundamental Fysiks Group. This group of physicists met in California in the 1970s. They explored new ideas in quantum physics. Their work helped inspire parts of quantum information science. This field looks at how information can be stored and processed using quantum rules.

Sarfatti has written several books. One of his books is Space-Time and Beyond (1975). He wrote it with Bob Toben and Fred Alan Wolf.

Exploring Consciousness and Space

Sarfatti's ideas connect quantum physics to the "Hard problem of consciousness." This problem asks how our conscious experiences are created. A researcher named Paavo Pylkkänen has mentioned Sarfatti's ideas in his own work.

Sarfatti has also claimed that he was asked to work on special projects. He says agents from the CIA and the DOD contacted him. This was in the 1970s. He claims they wanted him to work on the physics of consciousness. They also wanted him to study how "flying saucers" might move.

A professor named David Kaiser wrote about these connections. His book is called How the Hippies Saved Physics. Sarfatti has a recording of a meeting from 1973. He says it shows his discussions with these groups. Sarfatti's name also appears in some released CIA documents. These documents are about a project called STARGATE. This project looked into "remote viewing."

Other Activities

Sarfatti has been involved in several interesting projects. He was part of the Fundamental Fysiks Group. He also worked with the Physics–Consciousness Research Group. This group was linked to the Esalen Institute.

He was also invited to help with the 100 Year Starship program. This program aims to make human travel to other stars possible within 100 years.
