Early Life and Musical Journey
Jack Sherman was born in Miami, Florida, on January 18, 1956. As a child, his family moved to New York and then to California. When he was 8 years old, he watched the Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. This made him very interested in music, and he started learning to play the guitar. A couple of years later, he discovered the Rolling Stones, which made him even more involved in rock music. In San Diego, he played in several local bands.
Joining the Red Hot Chili Peppers
In December 1983, Jack joined the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. This happened after their first guitar player, Hillel Slovak, left the group. Jack went on tour with the band in 1984 to support their first album, The Red Hot Chili Peppers. This was the only album where he played guitar for the band.
In March 1984, Jack and the band made their first TV appearance on Thicke of the Night. They played an energetic new song called "True Men Don’t Kill Coyotes." They also performed their popular concert song "Get Up and Jump". Jack played all the shows with the Red Hot Chili Peppers from January 1984 to February 1985.
After the Chili Peppers
Jack Sherman helped write half of the songs for the band's second album, Freaky Styley. However, in early 1985, Hillel Slovak wanted to return to the band. Because of this, Jack was no longer part of the group before the recording started. Even so, he later sang backing vocals on two songs for their 1989 album, Mother's Milk.
After leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack worked with many other artists. He played on Bob Dylan's album Knocked Out Loaded. He also worked with funk musician George Clinton on R&B Skeletons in the Closet. Other musicians he collaborated with include Feargal Sharkey and Peter Case.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
In 2012, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, Jack Sherman was not included in this honor. He felt that the band members ignored the hard work he put in. He said he had "soldiered on under arduous conditions" to help the band.
Anthony Kiedis, the lead singer of Red Hot Chili Peppers, wrote about Jack in his 2004 book, Scar Tissue. Kiedis said the band knew their time with Jack might be short. But he also recognized that Jack played a very important part in keeping the band going during a tough time.
Passing Away
Jack Sherman passed away on August 18, 2020, at the age of 64. He died from a heart attack at his home in Savannah, Georgia. The Red Hot Chili Peppers released a statement thanking him for "all times good, bad and in between."
Flea, the bassist for Red Hot Chili Peppers, shared his own tribute to Jack on Instagram a month later. He said their relationship was "complicated." However, he also mentioned that Jack influenced his music and life. Flea remembered Jack playing an amazing guitar part on their song "Mommy Where’s Daddy." He said it changed how he heard rhythm forever. Flea also said Jack taught him about healthy eating. Most importantly, Flea called Jack his friend. He noted that even though they were very different, the joy they shared over music would last forever.
