John Elwood "Jack" Vance (July 28, 1933 – September 10, 2013) was a very important officer in the Canadian Forces. He reached the high rank of Lieutenant-General. He also served as the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff for Canada. This role is one of the highest leadership positions in the Canadian military.

Jack Vance's Military Career

Jack Vance began his military journey in 1952 when he joined the Canadian Army. He studied hard and graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in 1956. This college helps train future leaders for the Canadian Armed Forces.

Key Leadership Roles

Throughout his career, Jack Vance held many important leadership positions. In 1971, he became the Commanding Officer of 3 Mechanized Commando. This unit was based in Germany at CFB Baden-Soellingen.

He then took on roles focused on training and education. In 1972, he became the Deputy Chief of Staff for Training. The next year, in 1973, he was named the Director of Individual Training at National Defence Headquarters. This means he was in charge of how individual soldiers were trained.

Rising Through the Ranks

Jack Vance continued to advance in his career. In 1975, he became the Director-General of Recruiting, Education, and Training. This role involved overseeing how new people joined the military and how they were educated.

He then took command of a large group of soldiers. In 1976, he became the Commander of 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group. This was a major military unit.

After that, he moved into senior staff roles. He was the Chief of Staff Operations in 1978. In 1980, he became the Chief of Postings, Careers, and Senior Appointments. This meant he helped decide where officers would be placed and how their careers would progress.

Top Military Positions

In 1983, Jack Vance became the Chief of Personnel. This role focused on all matters related to military personnel. His career reached its peak in 1985 when he was appointed Vice Chief of the Defence Staff. This is a very senior leadership role, helping to lead the entire Canadian military.

Jack Vance retired from the military in 1988. He passed away in September 2013.

Jack Vance's son, Jonathan, also followed in his footsteps. Jonathan Vance later became the Chief of the Defence Staff for Canada. This is the highest military position in the country. He served in this role from 2015 to 2021.
