Jacqueline "Jackie" Burroughs (born February 2, 1939 – died September 22, 2010) was a talented actress. She was born in Britain but became a well-known Canadian star. Jackie was famous for her many roles in movies and TV shows, especially for playing Hetty King in the popular series Road to Avonlea.

Jackie Burroughs' Early Life

Jackie Burroughs was born in Southport, England. When she was nine years old, on August 26, 1948, she moved to Canada with her parents, Edna and Harry, and her younger brother, Gary.

Jackie Burroughs' Acting Career

Jackie Burroughs began her acting journey in live theater. She performed at the famous Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada. One of her big roles there was playing Portia in The Merchant of Venice in 1976.

She also appeared in many movies. Some of her film roles included The Dead Zone (1983) and The Grey Fox (1982). She even lent her voice to the animated movie Heavy Metal (1981).

On television, Jackie played Mrs. Amelia Evans in Anne of Green Gables (1985). But she is probably best known for her role as Hetty King in the CBC Television series Road to Avonlea. This show was based on the books by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Jackie played Hetty King from 1990 to 1996, and her character became a favorite for many viewers.

In 1987, Jackie Burroughs took on many roles for the film A Winter Tan. She produced, directed, helped write, and starred in the movie. Her hard work paid off, and she won a Genie Award for best actress for her performance. Throughout her career, she won several more Genie and Gemini awards, which are top honors for Canadian film and TV.

Her very first award was in 1969. She won the Canadian Film Award for best actress for her role in the TV film Dulcima. Later, in 2001, she received the Earle Grey Award. This award recognized her amazing contributions to arts and entertainment over many years. In 2005, Jackie received Canada's highest honor in performing arts, the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.

Jackie also used her voice for animated characters. She was the voice of The Spirit in The Care Bears Movie (1985). She also played teacher Nancy Galik in the TV film The Undergrads (1985). Later in her career, she appeared in the movie The Sentinel (2006). She also played a blind prophetess named Cassandra Carver in an episode of the TV series Smallville.

Jackie Burroughs' Personal Life

Jackie Burroughs was married to Zal Yanovsky, who was a co-founder of the music group The Lovin' Spoonful. They were married from 1961 to 1968. They had one daughter named Zoe, who is now a restaurant owner and author.

Jackie Burroughs' Passing

Jackie Burroughs passed away at her home in Toronto on September 22, 2010. She was 71 years old and had been battling stomach cancer.
