Jackie Larson Bread is a Native American beadwork artist. She is from the Blackfeet Reservation in Browning, Montana. Jackie became interested in beadwork after seeing her grandmother's beautiful pieces. Inspired by them, she taught herself how to bead when she was young. Jackie has been beading for over 20 years. Through practice and hard work, she has won many awards for her amazing beadwork.

Learning and Art School

In 1978, Jackie went to the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She earned associate degrees in two-dimensional art and museum studies. Later, she studied at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design. In 1986, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting.

Jackie's Unique Beading Style

Jackie uses a special method called the applique stitch for her beadwork. This method uses two needles. One needle holds a row of beads. The second needle carefully pins down each bead. This helps her place every bead perfectly.

Jackie often uses a small number of colors. These colors are common in traditional Native American beadwork. They include blue, black, red, yellow, and white. When she was younger, she used fewer colors because they were cheaper. Over time, she started to use more different colors.

Jackie's art mixes old and new styles. She creates amazing pictures with beads. She uses different shades of beads to make her art look deep and real. Her beadwork often shows her rich cultural heritage. She also includes images of people from her community. You can find her beadwork on bags, leather boxes, parasols, and other traditional items.

Sharing Her Knowledge

After finishing her studies, Jackie went back to her reservation in Browning, Montana. She started working at the Museum of the Plains Indians. This job helped her learn even more about beadwork from past artists.

Jackie also teaches workshops in nearby states like Idaho and California. In these classes, she shares her knowledge of traditional beading styles. She regularly teaches beading classes with the C.M. Russell Museum.
