History of Jacksonwald
The village of Jacksonwald was started in 1870. A man named John Jackson built the Jacksonwald Hotel that year. The hotel was located at the corner of Oley Turnpike Road and Church Lane Road.
Near the hotel was a small red schoolhouse. This schoolhouse was also built in 1870. It was later fixed up in 1970 for its 100th birthday. Before 1870, this area was known as Schwarzwald. This is a German word meaning "black forest." Early settlers thought the area looked like the Black Forest in Germany.
The word Wald means "woods" or "forests" in German. Many towns and villages in the past were named after important landmarks or people. So, the name Jacksonwald comes from John Jackson and the surrounding forests. The Jacksonwald Hotel was taken down on March 27, 1967. A bank branch, National Penn Bank, was built in its place.
