About Jacob K. Olupona

Professor Olupona is a leading expert on traditional African religions. Before coming to Harvard, he was a professor at the University of California, Davis.

His Research and Studies

He studies the religious practices of many Africans who have moved to the United States over the last 40 years. He looks at groups like "reverse missionaries" who come to the U.S. to start churches. He also studies African Pentecostals in American churches and American branches of independent African churches. His research also covers traditional African religious communities in the U.S.

His earlier work explored African spirituality and special practices. He also studied spirit possession, Pentecostalism, and Yoruba festivals. He looked at how animals are used as symbols and how different religions exist together in Africa and the Americas.

Books and Writings

Professor Olupona has written or edited many books. One of his important books is called City of 201 Gods: Ilé-Ifè in Time, Space, and the Imagination. In this book, he explores how religious beliefs and practices are part of daily life in the modern city of Ile-Ife. He looks at how rituals, royalty, and power mix together there.

Another book, Kingship, Religion, and Rituals in a Nigerian Community, has been used to study Yoruba-speaking communities.

Awards and Recognition

Professor Olupona has received support from many important groups. These include the Guggenheim Foundation and the Ford Foundation. He has also helped guide several academic journals. He was the president of the African Association for the Study of Religion. In 2000, he received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Early Life and Education

Jacob K. Olupona was born into a family with a strong religious background. Both his parents' families had well-known Anglican and non-Anglican priests. He grew up seeing many different religious activities and groups in the villages, towns, and cities around him. He was very interested in how people mixed different traditions. As he got older, he saw how Islam, Christianity, and traditional African religions existed together. This led him to study the ideas and practices of Yoruba sacred kingship.

University Studies

He finished his first university degree in 1975. After that, he completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ilorin, Nigeria. During his service year in 1976, there was a military coup where important leaders were killed. This made the country feel uneasy. A memorial church service for one of the leaders, General Murtala Muhammed, and the sermon by an Anglican Priest, made a big impact on him. Jacob K. Olupona started to think deeply about how different religions and national pride connect in Nigeria. These events helped him appreciate his own religious background and the freedom of worship in southwestern Nigeria.

Professor Olupona earned his first degree from the University of Nigeria. He then went on to get his master's degree and Ph.D. from Boston University in the United States.
