Jacobsen Valley facts for kids
Jacobsen Valley is a shallow valley found in the Vinson Massif. This area is part of the Sentinel Range in the Ellsworth Mountains of Antarctica. The valley slopes down towards the north from the very top of Mount Vinson, which is Antarctica's highest peak at 4,892 meters (about 16,050 feet).
This valley is about 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) long and 1.2 kilometers (0.75 miles) wide. On its western side, it is bordered by Branscomb Peak and Galicia Peak. To the east, a smaller ridge runs between Mount Vinson and Goodge Col. A glacier flows out of the valley, feeding into the Branscomb Glacier. This glacier is a key part of the common climbing path to the summit of Mount Vinson.
The valley is named after Solveig Gunbjørg Jacobsen (1913–1996). She was a Norwegian pioneer in Antarctica. Solveig was the first child born in the Antarctic region, on October 8, 1913, in Grytviken.
