Galicia Point is a tall mountain peak located in Antarctica. It reaches a height of 4,500 meters (about 14,764 feet). This impressive peak is part of the Vinson Massif, which is the highest mountain in Antarctica. It belongs to the Sentinel Range within the Ellsworth Mountains. Galicia Point overlooks the Jacobsen Valley to its east and the Branscomb Glacier to its north and west.
Why it's Called Galicia Point
This peak got its name from Galicia, a region in Spain. It was named to honor the Spanish climber Miguel Ángel Vidal. He successfully climbed the peak on December 28, 2004.
Where is Galicia Point Located?
Galicia Point is found at 78°30′30″S 85°42′00″W / 78.50833°S 85.70000°W. It is about 5.02 kilometers (3.12 miles) south of Mount Shinn, which is 4,661 meters tall. The peak is also 2.62 kilometers (1.63 miles) north-northwest of the very top of Mount Vinson, which stands at 4,892 meters. It is 840 meters (2,756 feet) north of Branscomb Peak (4,520 meters) and 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) east-southeast of Knutzen Peak (3,373 meters).
