Knutzen Peak facts for kids
Knutzen Peak is a tall, rocky mountain peak in Antarctica. It stands at a height of 3,373 meters (about 11,066 feet). This peak is located on the northern edge of Taylor Ledge. It is part of the Sentinel Range, which is a mountain range within the larger Ellsworth Mountains. Knutzen Peak rises above the Branscomb Glacier to its east and south.
The peak was named in 2006 by a group called the US-ACAN. This stands for the United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. They named it after Donald H. Knutzen. He was a topographic engineer who worked for the United States Geological Survey (USGS). He helped map the Sentinel Range between 1979 and 1980.
Where is Knutzen Peak Located?
Knutzen Peak is found at coordinates 78°29′47″S 85°56′35″W / 78.49639°S 85.94306°W. It is about 3.83 miles (6.16 km) southwest of Mount Shinn. It is also about 3.68 miles (5.92 km) west-northwest of Branscomb Peak. Another nearby peak is Brichebor Peak, which is about 5.1 miles (8.2 km) to the north. The area around Knutzen Peak was first mapped by the United States in 1961. These maps were later updated in 1988.
