A view of Jacona de Plancarte.

Jacona de Plancarte, often called Jacona, is a city in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. It is the main town of the Jacona Municipality.

Jacona is located in the northwest part of Michoacán. It sits on the northern side of the Sierra de Patamban mountains. This area is part of the Volcanic Belt, and the city is about 1,600 meters (5,250 feet) above sea level.

The city was officially founded in 1555 by Fray Sebastián de Trasierra. However, much older buildings and paintings have been found here. Some of these are over 3,000 years old! Jacona was an important place for ancient peoples. It was one of the first pre-Hispanic towns that the Spanish took control of.

What's in a Name? The Meaning of Jacona

The name Jacona comes from the Tecuexes people. They were one of the groups of the Great Chichimeca. Their language was Uto-Aztecan.

Originally, the word was spelled Xacona. Over time, the Spanish changed how words like Mexico (Mejico) were written. Xacona became Jacona.

The word Xucunan, from which Jacona comes, means "place of flowers and vegetables." This shows how beautiful and fertile the area was.

Jacona was in a Chichimeca region, right next to the Purepecha kingdom. Because of this, some nearby towns have Purepecha names. For example, the main hill near Jacona is called Curutaran.

Curutaran is a Purepecha word that means "Place where the gods gather to play ball." This wasn't just any game. It was a special "celestial ball game" played by the gods!
