Jacque Trevan Vaughn (born February 11, 1975) is an American professional basketball coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Kansas Jayhawks. The Jayhawks are part of the Big 12 Conference. Vaughn played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1997 to 2009. He played for teams like the Utah Jazz, Atlanta Hawks, Orlando Magic, New Jersey Nets, and San Antonio Spurs.

High School Success

Jacque Vaughn grew up in Altadena, California. He went to John Muir High School in Pasadena, California. Jacque was a great student, keeping a 3.94 GPA. He was also an amazing basketball player.

By his senior year, he was one of the top high school players in the country. Many experts ranked him as the number 7 recruit overall. He was also the number 2 point guard in his class of 1993. During that season, he scored over 21 points and made 19 assists per game. He also had six "triple-doubles," which means he reached double digits in three different stats in one game.

Jacque was named a First-Team All-American by many sports magazines. He also played in the famous McDonald's All-American Game. In that game, he set a record with 13 assists. He was even named co-MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the game. After high school, Jacque chose to play college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks.

In 1992, Jacque won the Dial Award. This award goes to the best male high school scholar-athlete in the nation. He was the first basketball player ever to win it.

College Highlights at Kansas

At the University of Kansas, Jacque Vaughn quickly became the starting point guard. In his first year, he won the MVP award at the Pre-Season NIT tournament. He also made a game-winning three-pointer in overtime against Indiana.

During his four years at Kansas, Jacque was known for passing the ball well. He was also a strong defender with great speed. By the end of his college career, he held the record for most assists in Kansas basketball history. This record has since been broken. He also held the all-time assist record for the Big Eight Conference.

Jacque was also excellent in his studies. He earned a 3.72 GPA while studying business administration. He was named an Academic All-American twice. In 1997, he was the GTE Academic All-American of the Year. He was also chosen for the all-conference team twice. In 1996, he was named the Big Eight Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year. To honor his achievements, his college jersey, number 11, was retired in 2002. It now hangs in the Allen Fieldhouse arena.

Professional Playing Career

In 1997, the Utah Jazz picked Jacque Vaughn as the 27th player in the 1997 NBA draft. He played four seasons with the Jazz. After that, he played for several other NBA teams. These included the Orlando Magic, the Atlanta Hawks (twice), the New Jersey Nets, and the San Antonio Spurs.

Jacque was part of the San Antonio Spurs team that won the NBA championship in 2007. He played 64 games for them that season. He finished his playing career with the Spurs, retiring after the 2008–09 season. Over his entire NBA career, he averaged about 4.5 points and 2.5 assists per game.

Assistant Coach Roles

From 2010 to 2012, he was an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs. He then worked as a professional scout for the Spurs during the 2015–16 season. In 2016, he joined the Brooklyn Nets as a top assistant coach.

Head Coach Positions

On July 28, 2012, Jacque Vaughn became the head coach of the Orlando Magic. He coached the Magic until February 5, 2015, when he was fired.

In March 2020, he became the interim head coach for the Brooklyn Nets. This happened after the previous coach left. He returned to his assistant coach role when Steve Nash was hired as head coach in September 2020.

On November 1, 2022, Vaughn was again named interim head coach for the Nets. This was after Steve Nash and the team decided to part ways. On November 9, he was officially announced as the permanent Nets head coach. The Nets signed him to a contract extension in February 2023. However, on February 19, 2024, the Nets fired Vaughn. The team had a record of 21 wins and 33 losses at that time.

Return to Kansas

In May 2025, Jacque Vaughn returned to his old college team. He was named an assistant coach for the Kansas Jayhawks.

Personal Life

Jacque Vaughn married his wife in 2003. They have two sons together. He enjoys reading and writing poetry in his free time.
