Dr. Couti started working at Rice University in 2018. She joined the Department of Modern and Classical Literatures and Cultures. This department teaches about different languages, books, and cultures from around the world.

Before coming to Rice, Dr. Couti worked at the University of Kentucky. She joined their Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in 2010. There, she was an associate professor of French and Francophone Studies.

Teaching and Research

At the University of Kentucky, Dr. Couti taught many interesting subjects. She taught about French language and culture. She also taught classes in Gender and Women Studies, which explores how gender affects people's lives. She also taught African-American and Africana Studies, which focuses on the history and culture of people of African descent.

Dr. Couti helped students as an advisor for the Caribbean Student Association. This group supports students from Caribbean countries.

Studying Aimé Césaire

Dr. Couti was born in Martinique, an island in the Caribbean where French is spoken. In 2010, she had a special opportunity to study the documents of Aimé Césaire. He was a very important writer and politician from Martinique.

Dr. Couti was the first scholar allowed to look at his personal papers in his home office. This research helped her prepare a special book about his writings.

• 2013-2014: She won the College of Arts & Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award at the University of Kentucky.
• 2016: She received the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Kentucky. This award recognized her efforts to make learning fair and welcoming for everyone.
