About Jacquelyn Days Serwer

Jacquelyn Days was born in Florida but grew up in New Rochelle, New York. She went to Sarah Lawrence College for her first degree. Later, she earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago. In 1981, she received her doctorate in art history from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Her Career in Art

In 1985, Serwer became a curator at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art. A curator is someone who manages and organizes collections of art. In 1987, she put together an art show about the artist Gene Davis. It was called Gene Davis: A Memorial Exhibition.

In 1999, she became the Chief Curator at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. In 2002, she organized the first big international show about the Pop artist Larry Rivers. This show was named Larry Rivers: Art and the Artist. Serwer worked as the Chief Curator for the Corcoran Gallery of Art for six years.

Serwer has been very important in building the collection for the National Museum of African American History and Culture. She helped get many special items for the museum. These include an original campaign office from the 2008 election of Barack Obama as President. She also helped acquire many photographs of Coretta Scott King.

Jacquelyn Days Serwer is married to Daniel Serwer. They have two sons. One son, Adam Serwer, is a journalist. Her other son, Jared Serwer, is an architect.
