Starting His Career
Jacques Desrosiers came from a family of entertainers. His father, Pierre Desrosiers, was a comedian, and his brothers, André Fontaine and Édouard Desrosiers, were singers. Jacques started his own career in 1956. He began as an imitator and cabaret performer on CBC/Radio-Canada television.
Soon, he was putting on his own shows. These shows included fun songs, parodies (funny imitations), and impressions of other people. He performed in many cabarets across Quebec, especially at the famous Casa Loma in Montreal. Some of his parody songs, like La Java à Lumina, Le Peddler, and La Machine à laver, became very popular. In 1963 and 1964, he was part of a show called Zéro de conduite with other stars like Dominique Michel and Donald Lautrec. He also performed in a musical called Le Vol rose du flamant.
Becoming a Television Star
Between 1968 and 1973, Jacques Desrosiers hosted several TV shows on CFTM channel 10. Some of these shows were Les trois cloches, Vaudeville, Café terrasse, and Madame est servie.
But Jacques Desrosiers became truly famous because of a special character: the clown Patof. He created Patof in January 1972 for a TV show called Le Cirque du Capitaine. His song Patof Blou, which was a version of Mammy Blue by Roger Whittaker, sold a huge number of copies. He also released many records with Gilbert Chénier. Jacques Desrosiers even started his own company, Les Entreprises Patof. This company sold many products for children that featured the popular clown.
Jacques Desrosiers hosted several shows as Patof on CFTM channel 10. He hosted Patofville from 1973 to 1976. He also hosted Patof raconte on weekends between 1975 and 1976, and Patof voyage from 1976 to 1977.
Other Talents
Besides his singing and clown work, Jacques Desrosiers also acted in TV shows and movies. In 1990, he appeared in an episode of the TV series L'amour avec un grand A. He also had a role in the fourth season of Scoop in 1995.
He acted in Canadian movies too. These included C'est pas la faute à Jacques Cartier (1967), Après ski (1970), Le Party (1990), and La Florida (1993). Jacques Desrosiers also performed in comedy plays directed by Gilles Latulippe.
Jacques Desrosiers passed away on June 11, 1996, after battling lung and bone cancer.
