Jacques Louis César Alexandre Randon, also known as Count Randon, was an important French military and political leader. He was born on March 25, 1795, and passed away on January 16, 1871. He became a Marshal of France, which is a very high military rank, and also served as a governor in Algeria.

Early Military Career

Jacques Randon was born in Grenoble, France. When he was just sixteen years old, he joined the French Army. He went to Warsaw to join his uncle, General Jean-Gabriel Marchand. By April 1812, he was promoted to sergeant.

Randon took part in some major historical events. He fought in the Russian Campaign in 1812. This included the capture of Moscow and the difficult retreat that followed. He also fought in Napoleon's campaigns in Germany and France. Some of the famous battles he was part of include Lützen, Bautzen, and Leipzig.

Important Roles and Achievements

Jacques Randon held several key positions during his career. He served as the Minister of War from January to October in 1851. This role meant he was in charge of the country's army.

After this, he was appointed Governor-General of Algeria. He held this important position from December 1851 to August 1858. Even though he initially didn't support a political change in December 1851, he later became a supporter of the Second French Empire.

In 1852, he was given the title of Count. Later, in 1856, he achieved the very high rank of Marshal of France. He served as Minister of War again from 1859 to 1867.

In 1859, a botanist named Ernest Saint-Charles Cosson named a type of flowering plant, Randonia, after Jacques Louis Randon. This plant is found in North Africa.
