Jaguas is a community, also known as a "barrio," located in the municipality of Ciales, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 4,545 people lived there. It is a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States.
Jaguas: A Look Back in Time
After the Spanish–American War ended, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This was part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory" of the U.S. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. This count found that the population of Jaguas barrio was 1,264 people at that time.
