Jahar Roy (born September 19, 1919 – died August 1, 1977) was a very popular Indian actor. He was especially known for making people laugh! Jahar Roy was a famous comedian in Bengali movies. He often worked with another great comedian, Bhanu Bandyopadhyay, to create hilarious films.
Early Life
Jahar Roy grew up in a Bengali family. His family came from a place called Mahilara, which is now in Bangladesh. His father, Satya Roy, was also an actor. The family later moved to Patna, India.
Jahar finished his studies in Patna. He tried different jobs there. He worked as a proofreader, a medical salesperson, and even a tailor. But he loved acting the most. Around 1946, he moved to Calcutta (now Kolkata) to follow his dream of becoming an actor.
His Movie Journey
Jahar Roy became very popular with movie fans. Even though he often played supporting roles, he made a big impact. His round and friendly appearance made him a favorite for directors. They often chose him to add funny moments to serious movies.
Some of Jahar Roy's first big movies were Purbarag and Anjangarh (from 1948). He acted in many, many films. Some of his most famous roles were in Dhanyee Meye, Chhadmabeshi, and Bhanu Goenda Jahar Assistant. He acted in about 350 films in total!
Working with Satyajit Ray
Jahar Roy also worked with the famous director Satyajit Ray. In Ray's film Parash Pathar, Jahar played a male servant. He had a bigger role in Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne. In this movie, he played a tricky, war-loving minister. This minister worked for a kind and peaceful king. Jahar Roy even sang the song Cho Cho Kya Sharam Ki Baat in the movie Chhadmabeshi.
Towards the end of his life, when he was not well, he made a short appearance in Ritwik Ghatak's film Jukti Takko Aar Gappo.
Theatre and Comedy
Jahar Roy was also well-known for his work in Bengali theatre. He acted in plays for over 20 years. He was a long-time member of the Rang Mahal theatre in Kolkata. People still remember his performances in plays like Adarsha Hindu Hotel, Ulka, Subarnagolak, and Anartha.
He was known for being a very witty person. He also used physical comedy to make people laugh. He created many comedy skits, such as Nyapasur Badh and Function theke shashan. Sadly, most of these skits are not available today.
