A Life in Politics
Early Life and Education
Alfonso Quintana was born in a city called Chillan in Chile. He went to school in his hometown and later studied at the Instituto Nacional General José Miguel Carrera. After that, he went to the University of Chile to study law. He became a lawyer in 1918, after writing a special paper about stock trading.
He started his law practice in Chillán. He was also very active in the Radical Party in Chillán. When Carlos Ibáñez del Campo became president, Quintana was sent away to Aysen. He was able to return after that government ended.
Starting His Political Career
In 1923, Alfonso Quintana married Berta Bar Benavente in Yungay. They had four daughters together.
After returning from Aysen, he was elected as a deputy in 1933. A deputy is like a representative in the country's parliament. He represented the areas of Chillán, Bulnes, and Yungay. He worked on committees related to agriculture and the economy. His work caught the attention of Pedro Aguirre Cerda, who later made him the Minister of Agriculture. He held this job until 1941. Before this, he had also been an alderman and mayor of Chillán.
Serving His Country
In 1943, Juan Antonio Ríos appointed Alfonso Quintana as Minister of Agriculture again. Later, on October 6, 1944, he became the Minister of the Interior of Chile. This is a very important job in the government. For a few days, he even served as Vice President because President Juan Antonio Ríos was ill.
In 1945, he was appointed as Chile's ambassador to Argentina. An ambassador represents their country in another nation. He returned to Chile in 1948 and was again made Minister of the Interior of Chile by Gabriel Gonzalez Videla. In 1950, he became the mayor of Santiago, the capital city. From 1951 to 1952, he served as Minister of the Interior one more time. Finally, in 1952, he was appointed as a deputy in the Ministry of Agriculture.
Alfonso Quintana was honored with a special award called the Order of the Liberator Argentino. He belonged to the Radical Party of Chile and continued to be active in politics until his death.
