Jaime Alvar Ezquerra is a Spanish historian, author, and professor who was born on April 20, 1955. He is an expert in ancient history and teaches at the Charles III University of Madrid.
Professor Alvar Ezquerra was born in Granada, Spain. He studied Geography and History at the Complutense University of Madrid. He also continued his studies in Germany at the University of Cologne from 1980 to 1981. He taught at the Complutense University for many years, from 1977 to 1996. After that, he became a professor in Huelva. He was even a visiting professor at the famous University of Cambridge in England from 1999 to 2000. Since 2000, he has been a professor at the Charles III University of Madrid. He has also been a visiting professor at universities in Rome (Italy), Franche-Comté (France), and Potsdam (Germany). He comes from a family of scholars; his older brother is Alfredo Alvar Ezquerra, and his younger brother is Carlos Alvar Ezquerra, who studies old languages. Their father, Manuel Alvar Ezquerra, was also a well-known Spanish language expert.

Exploring Ancient Worlds
Jaime Alvar Ezquerra's work mainly focuses on the early history of the Iberian Peninsula, which is where Spain and Portugal are today. He has studied how ancient Greeks and Phoenicians settled in the Mediterranean region and how they interacted with the Tartessic people.
He is also a leading expert on Religion in ancient Rome. He has researched how Roman culture adopted gods from other places, like Mithra, Isis, Serapis, Cybele, and Attis. He also looks at how the local religions in the Iberian Peninsula changed when they met other cultures from the Mediterranean. Currently, he is studying how history is put together and is the director of The Julio Caro Baroja Institute of Historiography at the Charles III University of Madrid.

Bringing the Past to Life
Professor Alvar Ezquerra has helped share history with a wider audience. He was an advisor for the "History of Spain" TV series, specifically for the sections on Prehistory and Early History. This series was shown on Spanish TV (Televisión Española) between 2004 and 2005. He also helped write the book that was based on this TV series.
He has led several projects for the publisher Editorial Espasa. These projects include creating dictionaries about Spanish history. He is also the editor of a book called Between Phoenicians and Visigoths, The Ancient history of The Iberian Peninsula.
