Jain Kim (Hangul: 김자인, born September 11, 1988) is a famous professional climber from South Korea. She is known for her amazing skills in competition climbing. She mostly competes in two types of climbing: competition lead climbing (where climbers try to go as high as possible on a wall) and competition bouldering (where they solve shorter, trickier climbing puzzles).

Jain has won many big competitions, including the Lead Climbing World Cup three times (in 2010, 2013, and 2014) and the Lead Climbing World Championship once (in 2014). She also won the Rock Master competition in 2010. She has been especially successful at the Asian Championships, winning 14 titles over 15 years. This includes 11 wins in lead climbing and 3 in bouldering.

Besides competing, Jain Kim has also achieved impressive climbs outdoors on real rocks. In 2014, she successfully climbed routes graded 8c (5.14b) and 8c+ (5.14c) in Arco, Italy. These are very difficult climbs!

Jain Kim's Climbing Journey

Jain Kim grew up in a family of mountaineers and climbers, so it was natural for her to start climbing at age 12. She began competing in the Lead Climbing World Cup in July 2004 when she was just 15 years old. By 2006, she also started taking part in the Bouldering World Cup.

Early Success in Asia

Jain quickly showed her talent. She won the Lead Climbing Asian Championship several times in a row: in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010. In 2008, she also became the Bouldering Asian Champion.

World Cup Wins

In 2009, Jain Kim achieved second place in the Lead Climbing World Cup and the Lead Climbing World Championship. She also took second place at the World Games (Lead) and third at the Rock Master (Lead).

Her big year was 2010 when she won both the Rock Master and the Lead Climbing World Cup. She was amazing in the World Cup, winning five out of six stages that year! She continued her winning streak, taking the Lead Climbing World Cup title again in 2013 and 2014. Each of those years, she won four of the eight events.

Outdoor Climbing Achievements

In May and June 2014, Jain Kim achieved a major milestone in outdoor rock climbing. She successfully climbed two very challenging routes in Arco, Italy: Bibita Biologica (graded 8c) and Reini's Vibes (graded 8c/8c+). These climbs are known for being extremely difficult.

On September 14, 2014, just after her 26th birthday, she had an incredible victory at the Lead Climbing World Championships. She managed to climb all the routes perfectly in the qualifications, semifinals, and finals. This is called an "on-sight" ascent, meaning she climbed them without any practice beforehand.

On May 20, 2017, Jain Kim took on a different kind of challenge. She climbed the 555-meter Lotte World Tower in Seoul, which is a very tall building!

More recently, on July 9, 2023, Jain Kim won a gold medal at the Lead World Cup in Chamonix. At 34 years old, she became the oldest woman to win a Lead World Cup, showing her lasting talent and dedication.

Personal Life

Jain Kim is married to Oh Young-hwan. He is a member of the National Assembly of Korea and used to be a firefighter. On March 10, 2021, Jain Kim became a mother when she gave birth to her daughter.
