Building History and Opening
The idea for the Lotte World Tower began many years ago. After 13 years of planning, the government finally approved its construction in November 2010. Work on the building started soon after in March.
On New Year's Eve in 2016, the tower's LED lights showed the number "2016". This was a fun way to celebrate the end of the year.
The tower officially opened on April 3, 2017. To mark this big event, Lotte shot off a spectacular fireworks display.
On January 1, 2018, Lotte celebrated New Year's Day again. They had another fireworks show combined with a laser light display. This celebration also honored the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
Tower Design and Height
The Lotte World Tower has a unique and modern design. It is shaped like a tall, slender cone. Its sides curve gently outwards.
How Tall is the Tower?
The tower's roof structure was finished on March 17, 2016. This roof is shaped like a lantern and uses a special design called a Diagrid. It is about 120 metres (390 ft) (394 feet) tall. This part covers floors 107 to 123.
Building the roof needed about 3,000 tons of steel. Workers used a very precise crane and GPS tools. The roof is built to be very strong. It can stand up to strong winds and even big earthquakes.
A Landmark Building
The Lotte World Tower is a famous landmark in Seoul. It was the first building in Korea to have over 100 floors. When it was finished, it was one of the tallest towers in the world. It was also the tallest building in countries that are part of the OECD.
The outside of the tower is made of light-colored glass. This design was inspired by traditional Korean ceramics. It also has pretty metal details.
What's Inside the Tower?

Safety and Events
During the tower's construction, there were some safety concerns. The mall and cinema at the base of the tower had to close for a short time. This was because of a small water leak from an aquarium. However, experts checked the building. They found these issues did not affect the tower's main structure. The mall and cinema later reopened safely.
Climbing the Tower
In 2016, two Russian and Ukrainian explorers climbed the tower while it was still being built. They were called Vadim Makhorov and Vitaly Raskalov. They shared a video of their climb online. This video became very popular around the world. After this, Lotte World Tower put up posters of them. They were not allowed back into the building.
