Club Career
Starting at Racing Santander
Jairo was born in Cabezón de la Sal, a town in Cantabria, Spain. He grew up playing football in the youth teams of his local club, Racing de Santander. In 2011, right after finishing his training, he was moved up to the main team by the manager Héctor Cúper.
Jairo made his first big game appearance in La Liga (Spain's top football league) on 27 August 2011. He played the last twelve minutes of a game against Valencia CF, coming in as a substitute. His team, Racing, lost that game 4–3.
Later that year, on 21 September 2011, Jairo, who was only 18, started his first official game for Racing. It was a home game against Real Madrid, and it ended in a 0–0 draw. On 25 October, he scored his first league goal in a 2–2 draw against Sevilla FC. In his first season, he started 14 league games, but unfortunately, his team was moved down to a lower league.
Moving to Sevilla
On 21 June 2013, after Racing was moved down another level, Jairo went back to the top league. He signed a five-year contract with Sevilla, a big club in Spain. People said the transfer cost around €2.5 million.
Jairo played his first game for Sevilla on 1 August. He came on as a substitute in a UEFA Europa League qualifying match against FK Mladost Podgorica, which Sevilla won 3–0. The UEFA Europa League is a major European club competition.
Playing in Germany with Mainz 05
Jairo moved to Germany on 29 August 2014, joining the Bundesliga (Germany's top league) team 1. FSV Mainz 05. He signed a four-year deal, and the transfer fee was thought to be around €2 million. In his first season with Mainz, he played 22 games and scored two goals. His team finished 11th in the league.
On 5 December 2015, Jairo scored two goals in one game, which is called a "brace." This helped his team win 3–1 against Hamburger SV. The next year, on 2 March, he scored the first goal for Mainz against FC Bayern Munich, a very strong team. Mainz ended up winning 2–1, giving Bayern their first home defeat of that season.
Back to Spain with Las Palmas
As a free agent (meaning he was not tied to any club), Jairo returned to Spain on 1 January 2018. He signed with UD Las Palmas, a team that was struggling in the top league at the time. He played his first league game for them 12 days later, starting in a tough 6–0 loss to Girona FC.
Return to Germany with Hamburger SV
In the summer of 2018, Jairo went back to Germany to play for Hamburger SV, which was in the 2. Bundesliga (Germany's second division). He didn't play many games during his two years there, only 19 in total. This was mainly because of a serious knee injury. He did score one goal in a 4–2 win against Karlsruher SC.
Later Career Teams
On 29 September 2020, Jairo signed a two-year contract with Málaga CF, another team in Spain's second division. In August 2022, he moved abroad again, signing a one-year deal with Budapest Honvéd FC in Hungary's top league, the Nemzeti Bajnokság I.
Jairo stayed in Hungary's top division when he signed for Mezőkövesdi SE on 24 January 2024.
