History of Jamaica
Jamaica was officially planned and settled in 1882.
A local historian, Bruce F. Towne, wrote a book about the town's history. He owned a grocery store in Jamaica for many years.
Over the years, the town has seen various events. In 1919, there was a sad incident involving two people in the Raccoon River. In 1921, a local garage was destroyed by fire due to an accident with a car. Also, in the 1930s, a flu outbreak affected many residents.

Near Jamaica, there is a unique octagon barn built in 1881. It is one of only seven such barns in Iowa listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The metal band Slipknot also filmed the music video for their song "Psychosocial" at this barn.
