Jamel Artis went to Notre Dame Prep in Massachusetts. On April 12, 2013, he decided to play college basketball for the Pittsburgh Panthers.
As a first-year player, called a freshman, Artis played as a power forward. He often came into the game from the bench. After the 2014–15 season, Artis was recognized for his great play. He was named to the All-ACC third team. In his final year, he also received an honorable mention for the All-ACC team.
Professional Basketball Career
Starting with the NBA: Orlando Magic
After the 2017 NBA draft, Jamel Artis was not chosen by any team. However, he still got a chance to play. On June 24, 2017, he signed a contract with the New York Knicks. He joined their team for the 2017 NBA Summer League. During the Summer League, he played well. He scored about 8.8 points per game.
On August 18, 2017, Artis officially signed with the New York Knicks. But he was released from the team on October 4, before the regular season started. A few days later, on October 16, Artis signed a special contract with the Orlando Magic. This was a "two-way contract." It meant he would split his time playing for the Orlando Magic and their minor league team, the Lakeland Magic. Jamel Artis made his first NBA appearance for Orlando on December 13. He played for one minute in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Playing for the Agua Caliente Clippers
On September 24, 2018, Artis signed with the Sacramento Kings. He joined them for their training camp. However, on October 7, 2018, the Kings released him from their team.
Playing in France: Levallois Metropolitans
On July 3, 2019, Jamel Artis moved to France. He joined the Levallois Metropolitans basketball team. He played well there, averaging 13.3 points per game. He also grabbed 4.1 rebounds and made 1.7 assists per game.
Playing in Lithuania: BC Juventus
On September 21, 2020, Artis signed with BC Juventus. This team plays in the Lithuanian Basketball League.
Back to France: Chorale Roanne
On December 25, 2020, Artis returned to France. He signed with Chorale Roanne Basket in the LNB Pro A league. He played 26 games for them. In those games, he averaged 11.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.
Playing in Japan: Kyoto Hannaryz
On August 31, 2021, Jamel Artis signed with Kyoto Hannaryz. This team plays in Japan's B.League.
Playing in Greece: Ionikos Nikaias
