James Arvaluk (born April 1948 – died April 27, 2016) was an important Canadian politician. He was from Coral Harbour, a community in Nunavut. James Arvaluk served in the government for many years.
He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Northwest Territories from 1991 to 1995. Later, he also served in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 1999 to 2003. He made history as Nunavut's very first Minister of Education.

A Life in Politics
James Arvaluk dedicated much of his life to public service. He worked to represent the people of his region.
Early Political Steps
In 1991, James Arvaluk was first elected. He became a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. He represented the area known as Aivilik. He served in this role until 1995. In February 1995, he decided to step down from his seat.
When Nunavut became its own territory, James Arvaluk continued his political work. In 1999, he was elected to the new Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. He represented the Nanulik area. During this time, he took on a very important job. He became Nunavut's first-ever Minister of Education. This meant he helped shape the schools and learning for all children in the new territory. He served in this role until 2003.
Return to Public Service
After a break, James Arvaluk returned to politics. On October 16, 2006, he was elected again. This time, he represented the Tununiq electoral district. He continued to work for his community.
Later Years and Legacy
In 2010, James Arvaluk faced some health challenges. Because of his health, he decided to resign from his position on May 16, 2011. He passed away in Winnipeg on April 27, 2016. James Arvaluk is remembered for his dedication to the people of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.
