Sir James Forrest Halkett Carmichael (born July 8, 1868 – died August 12, 1934) was an important figure in the British Army. He was also a skilled engineer and worked as a colonial administrator. This means he helped manage parts of the British Empire overseas.

Early Life and Military Training

James Carmichael was born in 1868. His father worked as a civil servant in India. James went to school at Clifton College. After that, he studied at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. This academy trains future officers for the British Army.

In 1887, James joined the Royal Engineers. This is a special part of the army where engineers use their skills. They build things like bridges and fortifications. He rose through the ranks, becoming a captain in 1898 and a major in 1906.

Service Around the World

From 1889 to 1900, Carmichael worked in many different countries. He served in India, Aden, Somaliland, and Burma. These were all places that were part of the British Empire.

Later, from 1900 to 1904, he worked in London. He was part of the War Office, which managed the British Army. He also worked with the Ordnance Survey. This group makes detailed maps of the country.

Working for the Colonies

In 1904, James Carmichael left the army. He then started a new job with the Crown Agents for the Colonies. This organization helped manage the finances and supplies for British colonies around the world. He became the head of their Engineering and Works Department. This meant he was in charge of building projects.

Role During World War I

When the First World War began, James Carmichael rejoined the army. He worked at the War Office on the Armaments Output Committee. This committee made sure enough weapons were being produced.

He also worked for the Ministry of Munitions. This ministry was created to make sure the army had all the supplies it needed. Carmichael helped with metals and munitions supply. He also worked on a committee for high-speed steel.

Post-War Career and Honours

After the war ended, Carmichael returned to his job with the Crown Agents. He was later promoted to chief engineer. In 1921, he became one of the main Crown Agents. He retired from this important role in 1932.

For his hard work and service, James Carmichael received several important awards. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1918. In 1920, he became a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). He was also knighted in 1929, which meant he could use the title "Sir."
