James Carter (born January 3, 1969) is an American jazz musician. He is famous for how well he plays many different saxophones and other woodwinds. His cousin, Regina Carter, is also a well-known jazz violinist.

About James Carter
Early Life and Music Training
James Carter was born in Detroit, Michigan. He started learning music from Donald Washington, Sr.. He joined a youth jazz group called Bird-Trane-Sco-NOW!!
When he was young, James went to the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He even became the youngest teacher there! At 16, in 1985, he went on his first tour. He played with the International Jazz Band in Scandinavia.
Starting His Career
In 1988, James got a big chance. He filled in for a guest artist, Lester Bowie, at the Detroit Institute of Arts. This led to an invitation to play with Bowie's new band in New York City. This was a very important moment for James. It helped him connect with the music world. Two years later, he moved to New York.
Since the late 1980s, James has been a major jazz performer. He plays saxophones, flutes, and clarinets.
James Carter in Movies
In 1996, James Carter was in a movie called Kansas City. He played the role of a famous jazz musician named Ben Webster. Other modern jazz artists were also in the film. They played musicians from the 1930s. The movie had real-time jam sessions. These were also put on the movie's soundtrack.
