James Cervetto (born 8 January 1748 – died 5 February 1837) was a very talented English cellist. A cellist is someone who plays the cello, a large string instrument. James Cervetto performed in fancy places and at important concerts during his time. He was even the main soloist when Haydn's famous second cello concerto was played for the very first time.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

James Cervetto was born in London in 1748. His father, Giacobbe Cervetto, was also a cellist. James learned to play the cello from his father and quickly became very good.

He gave his first public concert on 23 April 1760. This was at the Little Theatre, Haymarket. He played alongside other young musicians, including Gertrud Elisabeth Mara. She played the violin then, but later became a famous singer. From 1763, James Cervetto traveled and performed in many major cities across Europe.

A Busy Career

In 1771, James Cervetto joined the private orchestra of the Queen. This was a special group of musicians who played just for the Queen. Later, in 1780, he became a member of Lord Abingdon's private orchestra.

He was also a main soloist at the "Professional Concerts". These were important public concerts that started in 1783. James performed there until 1794. He was a member of the Royal Society of Musicians for a very long time, 72 years!

Later Years and Legacy

Early in his career, James Cervetto was a friendly rival with another cellist named John Crosdill. In 1783, his father passed away and left him a large sum of money. After this, James became less active in his music career.

His last known concert was on 2 March 1795. It took place at Frederick, Duke of York's home, York House, Picadilly. Even King George III was there to watch him play.

James Cervetto died in London on 5 February 1837. He left money to several people, including George Basevi, an architect, and Maria D'Israeli. Maria was the mother of Benjamin Disraeli, who later became a Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
