James Donald Charteris, also known as Jamie Neidpath, is a British nobleman and landowner. He holds the titles of the 13th Earl of Wemyss and 9th Earl of March. He was born on June 22, 1948.
About James Charteris
Early Life and Education
James Donald Charteris is the second son of Francis David Charteris, who was the 12th Earl of Wemyss. His mother was Mavis Murray. He attended Eton College, a famous school in England.
When he was a teenager, he served as a Page of Honour to the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. This was a special role where he helped the Queen Mother at official events.
He later studied at Oxford University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1969 and his Master of Arts (MA) degree in 1974. He also completed a DPhil (a type of doctorate) from St Antony's College, Oxford in 1975. In 1978, he received a diploma from the Royal Agricultural College.
Career and Titles
James Charteris manages a company called Alro Group. This group focuses on managing real estate funds.
He became the heir to the titles of Earl of Wemyss and Earl of March after his older brother, Iain David Charteris, passed away in 1954. From that time, he was known as Lord Neidpath. In 2005, he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire. This is a role that supports the Lord-Lieutenant in a county.
He also made donations to the political party UKIP between 2001 and 2015.
Family Life
James Charteris has been married twice. His first marriage was to Catherine Guinness in July 1983. Catherine is the daughter of Jonathan Guinness, 3rd Baron Moyne.
James and Catherine have two children:
- A son named Francis Richard Charteris, who was born in 1984. He is known as Lord Elcho and is the heir to the earldoms.
- A daughter named Lady Mary Charteris, who is a model and singer.
James and Catherine divorced in 1988. Catherine later married Robert Hesketh in 1990.
In January 1995, James Charteris married Amanda Feilding. Amanda founded The Foundation to Further Consciousness in 1996, which was later renamed the Beckley Foundation in 1998. This organization conducts research. Amanda Feilding continues to be its director.
James and Amanda lived at Stanway House in Gloucestershire and at Gosford House in East Lothian. Amanda Feilding passed away in January 2025.
His uncle, Martin Charteris, Baron Charteris of Amisfield, served as the Private Secretary to Queen Elizabeth II.
