James Anthony Dean (born February 7, 1943 – died April 9, 2006) was an American songwriter. He was famous for his work at Motown Records in the 1960s. He often worked with William Weatherspoon. Together, they wrote many hit songs. One of their most famous songs was "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" for Jimmy Ruffin.

Dean also teamed up with John Glover. They wrote "You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show)". This song became a number one hit in the US for Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr..

His Life and Music Journey

James Dean was born in Detroit. He was the oldest child of Richard and Dorothy Dean. He went to Hamtramck High School in Hamtramck, Michigan.

After serving in the US Army, James Dean started working as a songwriter. He joined Motown Records in 1964. This was a very exciting time for music!

James Dean often worked with William Weatherspoon. They wrote many popular songs together. They created several hits for Jimmy Ruffin, including "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." James Dean also worked with other talented people. He co-wrote "Everything Is Good About You Baby" for The Supremes with Eddie Holland. James Dean passed away in 2006 at his home in Detroit. He was 63 years old. He died from cancer of the spine. His music continues to be enjoyed by many people.
