Sir James Everard Home, 2nd Baronet (born October 25, 1798, in Hampshire, England – died November 1, 1853, in Sydney, Australia) was an important officer in the Royal Navy, which is the British navy. He was also a Baronet, which is a special title passed down through families. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), meaning he was a respected scientist.

Early Naval Career

Sir James began his naval career and quickly rose through the ranks. From 1834 to 1837, he was the commander of a warship called HMS Racehorse (1830). This ship had 18 guns and was a type of vessel known as a sloop. During this time, he served in the West Indies, a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea.

Serving on HMS North Star

From 1841 to 1846, Sir James was the captain of another warship, the corvette HMS North Star. A corvette is a smaller, fast warship.

The First Opium War

In 1841 and 1842, HMS North Star was part of a British fleet in Canton (now Guangzhou), China. They were involved in a conflict known as the First Opium War. This war was mainly about trade disagreements between Britain and China. Sir James served under Sir William Parker, a famous British admiral.

Operations in New Zealand

On March 23, 1845, HMS North Star arrived in New Zealand. The ship then operated in the Bay of Islands during a conflict called the Flagstaff War. This war took place between March 1845 and January 1846. It was a conflict between some Māori chiefs and the British.

The Pōmare Incident

During the Flagstaff War, on April 30, 1845, a Māori chief named Pōmare was taken aboard HMS North Star. His fortified village, called a , had been burned. Pōmare was then taken to Auckland. He was later released after another Māori chief, Tāmati Wāka Nene, helped to resolve the situation.

Final Command and Death

From November 28, 1850, Sir James Everard Home was the captain of HMS Calliope. This ship was a 28-gun warship, known as a sixth-rate ship. He remained captain of HMS Calliope until he passed away in Sydney, Australia, on November 1, 1853.

A special plaque, which is a memorial, can be found for him in St James' Church, Sydney.
