James Ferdinand Izlar (November 25, 1832 – May 26, 1912) was an important politician from South Carolina. He served as a U.S. Representative for his state.

Early Life and Education

James Izlar was born on November 25, 1832, near Orangeburg, South Carolina. He went to local schools in his area. Later, he attended Emory College in Oxford, Georgia. He graduated from Emory College in 1855.

After college, James Izlar decided to study law. He worked hard and became a lawyer in 1858. He then started his law practice in Orangeburg.

Public Service and Career

James Izlar was very active in public service. During the American Civil War, he served as an officer in the Confederate States Army. After the war ended, he returned to his law practice in Orangeburg.

State Politics

He became a member of the South Carolina State Senate. He served in this role from 1880 to 1890. In 1889, the state's general assembly chose him to be a judge. He served as a judge for the first judicial circuit. He also attended the Democratic National Convention in 1884. This is where political parties choose their candidates for president.

Serving in Congress

James Izlar was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He filled a vacant seat in the Fifty-third Congress. He served in Congress from April 12, 1894, until March 3, 1895. He decided not to run for re-election in 1894.

Later Life

After his time in Congress, James Izlar went back to being a lawyer in Orangeburg. He continued his law practice until 1907. He then retired from his work. James Izlar passed away at his home in Orangeburg on May 26, 1912. He was buried in the Episcopal Cemetery in Orangeburg.
