James Francis Thomas (born July 25, 1861 – died November 11, 1942) was a well-known lawyer from Tenterfield, New South Wales, Australia. He also held the rank of Major in the army.
Major Thomas became famous for defending three soldiers during the Second Boer War. These soldiers were Lieutenants Peter Joseph Handcock, George Ramsdale Witton, and Harry "Breaker" Morant. They were part of a group called the Bushveldt Carbineers in the British Army. Major Thomas represented them in a very important trial.
Early Life and Education
James Francis Thomas was born in St Marys, New South Wales. He went to school at The King's School, Parramatta, which is a famous school. Later, he continued his studies at the University of Sydney.
Becoming a Lawyer
After finishing his education, James Thomas started his law career. He worked as an 'articled clerk' in a respected law firm in Sydney. This is like being an apprentice to a lawyer, where you learn the job by helping experienced lawyers.
On May 28, 1887, he officially became a solicitor. This meant he could practice law on his own and represent people in court.
Running a Newspaper
Besides being a lawyer, James Thomas also owned and ran a newspaper. For sixteen years, starting in 1898, he was in charge of the Tenterfield Star newspaper. This showed he had many different talents!
His Later Years
James Francis Thomas passed away on November 11, 1942. This day is known as Remembrance Day. He died at his home in Boonoo Boonoo, which is close to Tenterfield.
