James Garneth Carter (born December 15, 1877 – died 1949) was an important African-American diplomat from the United States. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in another country, helping with things like trade and looking after their citizens. Carter served as an American consul in several places, including Tamatave and Tananarive in Madagascar, and Calais and Bordeaux in France.

Carter was born in Brunswick, Georgia. Before becoming a diplomat, he had many different jobs. He worked as a tailor, managed a newspaper, helped out at a post office, and was a merchant. He was even offered a job in Liberia, but he chose not to take it.

Carter's Diplomatic Journey

James G. Carter spent many years working for the United States government in other countries. His job was to help American citizens and businesses in those places. He also reported back to the U.S. government about important events and conditions.

Serving in Madagascar

Carter first served as a consul in Tamatave, Madagascar, from 1906 to 1916. After that, he moved to Tananarive, also in Madagascar, where he worked from 1916 to 1927. During his time in Madagascar, he sent back interesting reports. For example, he shared information about different types of beans from the island. He also reported on the opening of the Madagascar Railway, which was a big step for the country's transportation.

Working in France

After his time in Madagascar, Carter moved to France. He was the consul in Calais from 1927 to 1940. In 1940, he briefly served in Bordeaux.

A Brave Escape

While Carter was stationed in Calais, a very difficult situation happened during World War II. In 1940, German forces invaded France. Instead of retreating with the French, Carter showed great courage and quick thinking. He drove his car into German territory, followed the Rhine River, and managed to drive safely into Switzerland. This was a very brave and clever way to escape danger.
