James Hook (born June 16, 1771 – died February 5, 1828) was an English Anglican priest. He was a very important leader in the Church of England. From 1825 until he passed away, he held the title of Dean of Worcester. This meant he was the head of the cathedral in Worcester.
Early Life and Schooling
James Hook was born on June 16, 1771. His father was a famous composer also named James Hook. Young James went to Westminster School, which is a well-known school in London. After that, he studied at St Mary Hall, Oxford, a part of the famous University of Oxford.
His Work as a Priest
James Hook became a priest in 1796. He married the daughter of Walter Farquhar, who was a well-known doctor from Scotland.
Over the years, James Hook held several important jobs in the church. In 1814, he became an Archdeacon of Huntingdon. An Archdeacon helps a bishop manage a part of the diocese (a church area). Later, in 1817, he became the Rector of Whippingham. A Rector is the main priest in charge of a church parish.
James Hook was also a talented person outside of his church work. He enjoyed climbing mountains, wrote novels, and composed music. He passed away on February 5, 1828. His brother, Theodore Hook, and his son, Walter Farquhar Hook, also became famous in their own careers.
