Walter Farquhar Hook (born March 13, 1798 – died October 20, 1875) was a very important church leader during the Victorian era. People at the time often called him Dr Hook.

He was the Vicar (a type of church leader) of Leeds. He helped build the Leeds Minster church that stands today. He also made many improvements to the city's churches and social life in the mid-1800s. His work was amazing because he was a High Churchman and Tractarian in a city where many people were non-conformists. Later in his life, he became the Dean of Chichester.

Walter Hook's Early Life

Hook was born in London on March 13, 1798. His father was James Hook, and his mother was Anne Farquhar. He went to school at Blundell's School and Winchester College. Later, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford university.

He became a priest in 1822. He first worked as a helper priest at his father's church on the Isle of Wight. Then, he became a vicar in Birmingham and later in Coventry. In 1829, he married Anna Delicia Johnstone. They had several children together.

His Time in Leeds

In 1837, Walter Hook was asked to become the Vicar of Leeds. Leeds was a growing city during the industrial revolution. Many people in Leeds were non-conformists, meaning they belonged to Protestant churches that were not the official Church of England.

Hook believed in the ideas of the Tractarians, which caused some people to criticize him. However, his strong character and dedication to helping his community earned him support. Even people from different groups respected him.

Rebuilding Churches in Leeds

Hook decided to rebuild his church, the Leeds Parish Church. He used a special tax called the church rate to pay for it. This was difficult because many non-conformists did not want to pay this tax.

He also worked to divide Leeds into 21 smaller church areas, called parishes. Each parish would have its own church. He even took a pay cut and moved to a smaller house to help make this happen. This also meant that people no longer had to pay to sit in the front seats of the churches.

Supporting Education for Children

Hook was very interested in educating children. He helped build and support about 30 schools in Leeds. At that time, not everyone agreed that society should provide education for all children.

Some wealthy people in Leeds did not think it was necessary to educate everyone. But Hook strongly believed that education was important for all children. He felt it was society's duty to help provide it.

The Leeds Minster church is still a reminder of Hook's work. It is an important example of the Gothic revival style, which was popular for churches at the time.

Later Life in Chichester

In 1859, Hook left Leeds to become the Dean of Chichester. This was another important role in the church. He was also made an honorary chaplain for a local military group.

Walter Hook passed away on October 20, 1875. He was buried in a small village called Mid Lavant, near Chichester.

In 1862, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a special honour for people who have made important contributions to science or knowledge. He was recognized for his writings, including books about archbishops and church history.

A memorial was built for Hook inside the Leeds Parish Church. In 1903, a statue of him was put up in Leeds City Square. It stands with statues of other important leaders of the city. Also, the All Souls' Church, Blackman Lane in Leeds was built by public donations as a memorial to him.
