About James Howe

James Howe grew up in Oneida, New York. When he was about nine or ten, he loved to write. He even wrote a play based on the "Blondie" comic strip. He also created his own short stories and newspapers. One of his favorite creations was The Gory Gazette. This was a newspaper for a club he started called the Vampire Legion.

James studied theater at Boston University. He kept writing plays there. Later, he moved to New York City. He worked as an actor and a model. He also directed plays and helped other writers as a literary agent.

How Bunnicula Began

In the mid-1970s, James and his wife, Deborah Howe, watched old Dracula movies. They came up with an idea for a children's story. It was about a pet rabbit that might be a vampire. Together, they wrote Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery.

This book became very popular. It won more than ten Children's Choice awards. These included the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award. Bunnicula later became a whole series of books.

He also writes novels for older kids and young adults. Some of his books are based on classic stories. He has even written screenplays for movies and TV shows.

In 1997, he published his first young adult novel, The Watcher. Another one of his books, The Misfits, was inspired by a child's tough experiences in middle school. This book even inspired GLSEN's yearly No Name-Calling Week.

In 2007, James Howe won The E.B. White Read Aloud Award. He received it for his picture book Houndsley and Catina. Marie-Louise Gay illustrated this book. It was published by Candlewick Press.
