Oneida is a city in Madison County, New York. It is located west of Oneida Castle and east of Wampsville. In 2020, about 10,329 people lived there. The city is named after the Oneida people. They were a Native American group who lived in this area a long time ago.

History of Oneida

After the American Revolution, many people from New England moved to central and western New York. In the early 1800s, the Erie Canal was built. This canal helped people and goods move across New York. Oneida grew as new trade routes opened up. A canal to Oneida Lake and a railroad stop helped connect the area to major trade networks.

The village of Oneida became official on June 20, 1848. It was part of the larger town of Lenox. But over time, people in Oneida wanted to be independent. So, in 1896, it became its own town called Oneida. Then, on March 28, 1901, it officially became the City of Oneida.

The first elected mayor of Oneida was Julius M. Goldstein. He was a co-founder of a cigar company.

Oneida is also known for the Oneida Community. This was a special group of people who lived together from 1848 to 1881. They tried a new way of living and sharing everything. The community made silk and canned goods. Later, they started making flatware, like forks and spoons. This led to the creation of Oneida Limited in 1880. This company became very famous for making flatware. Today, Oneida Limited is still based in the city. The Oneida Community Mansion House is a historic building from that time. You can visit it to learn more about the community.

Oneida has several places listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are important buildings and sites that are protected for their history. Some examples include the Main-Broad-Grove Streets Historic District and the United States Post Office.
