History of Lenox
Early Settlements and Formation
The first people started settling in the Lenox area around 1792. This was a long time ago, even before New York was a state!
The town of Lenox was officially formed in 1809. It was created from a larger area called the Town of Sullivan.
Life During the Erie Canal Construction
A famous writer named Walter D. Edmonds wrote novels about life in this area. His stories show what it was like when the Erie Canal was being built. The Erie Canal was a very important waterway. It helped people and goods travel across New York State.
